Vintage, an ethical alternative to fast fashion - here’s my top 5 reasons why…

1.    Wearing Vintage contributes to the fight against climate change. You can feel good about reducing your participation in environmental pollution when buying Vintage. 2.   Wearing Vintage prevents unnecessary material wastage. On average one person discards 60 lbs of textiles each year, by buying pre-loved you contribute to the sustainable fashion movement. 3.   Buying Vintage will save you $$, quality Vintage will cost you less than buying new in most circumstances. 4.   Buying Vintage means you are buying quality built to last. When these items were made, fast fashion practices hadn’t emerged yet. Which means, you're getting more bang for your buck. 5.   Last, but not least, wearing Vintage means you’ll always be uniquely in style and look one of a kind!

The 4 Rs of Circular Fashion: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle & Remove

Circular fashion emphasizes the importance of reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling clothing to create a more sustainable fashion industry. This approach involves designing clothing that is made to last, using eco-friendly materials, implementing ethical labour practices, and recycling clothing helping to reduce the amount of textiles that end up in landfills, which can take hundreds of years to decompose. Next time you reach for a quick fashion fix or you are decluttering your closet, consider: Reduce: Do I really need that 4th pair of jeans? Reuse: Could I re wear this dress to another event? Recycle: Is it time to donate this clothing? By reducing, reusing and recycling, you can contribute to the Removal of unnecessary items ending up in landfill thereby minimizing your impact on the environment and helping to create a more sustainable world.

The Problem with Fast Fashion

The rapid production and consumption of clothing designed to be worn for a short period of time before being discarded is responsible for as much as 10% of global carbon emissions. This clothing can be poor quality too and so often cannot be resold or recycled as is. The fast fashion industry has many negative impacts, including the production of large amounts of waste, and the depletion of natural resources, on our planet! As consumers become more aware of these issues, they are seeking out more sustainable solutions for their discarded garments. Fast fashion has changed the textile industry. For example, traditionally fabric cutting was always optimized to use the least material possible, in order to minimize waste and superfluous costs. This type of cutting takes more time than fast fashion production will allow, now, factories need to get the pieces cut as quickly as possible instead of efficiently using the fabric. Thus producing more waste. This waste is described as pre-consumer textile waste, in other words, waste created before the item has even landed in the consumer’s realm!! So, what can you do? People are consuming clothing at an alarming rate and just discarding it at what they think is the end of its life. Instead, consider donating your unwanted & discarded textile materials so they can be given a new life and stay out of Landfill!
